Transparency Maldives is deeply concerned about the current allegations that CEO and editor of Adhadhu news was directly threatened by the highest executive power in the country. Press freedom is enshrined in the Constitution of the Maldives under Article 28, and journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of harassment, intimidation, or reprisals. An independent and free press is a cornerstone of democracy, and any attempts to intimidate or silence journalists undermine fundamental rights and weaken public trust in democratic institutions.

We emphasize that any concerns or grievances regarding media reporting must be addressed through legal and institutional mechanisms, in accordance with due process, under the relevant laws, regulations and codes of ethical and professional conduct, rather than through intimidation. The use of threats to suppress journalistic work contradicts democratic values and erodes the principles of accountability and good governance.

Transparency Maldives reiterates the calls of the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) and calls on relevant authorities to take immediate steps to conduct a fair and transparent investigation into the reported allegations. All complaints regarding threats or intimidation against journalists must be addressed through proper legal channels, ensuring accountability. Additionally, the current case investigated by relevant authorities must follow due procedure and must be conducted transparently and fairly.

Maldives has previously seen repeated threats against journalists including harassment, attacks, and enforced disappearances. The lack of accountability, delays in justice, and lack of action in such incidents has fostered a culture of impunity, further endangering press freedom in the country. A free and independent media is vital for strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.
