Maahara 5 – Identity

In this 5th issue of Maahara Digest, we open up space for young Maldivians to explore identity not as a fixed idea, but as something constantly negotiated in the spaces between who we are, who we are expected to be, and who we hope to become.

Across the Maldives, identity is often shaped by forces beyond the individual, sometimes by family structures, community expectations, economic realities, political climates, and social hierarchies. In many ways, these forces shape not just how we see ourselves, but also who feels secure, heard, and included in society.

For young people navigating unemployment, limited opportunities, or rigid social norms, questions of identity and belonging are deeply intertwined with feelings of exclusion, frustration, and uncertainty about the future.

Through art, poetry, and personal reflection, contributors to this issue confront these tensions head-on. They explore what it means to claim space for oneself in a context where belonging can be conditional, and where self-expression is often shaped by structural inequalities and unspoken expectations.

Each submission is an act of self-definition – an assertion that identity is not only personal but also political and deeply connected to the world around us. As you turn these pages, may their work invite you to reflect on how identity is both a mirror of individual experience and a window into the collective struggles and resilience of our communities.
